The Wrocław Puppet Theatre, since 2012 led by the Polish-Czech tandem Janusz Jasiński (CEO) – Jakub Krofta (artistic director), consistently adheres to the repertoire line designated nine years ago. The main focus is on new Polish drama. To work on plays – usually commissioned – the theatre invites artists who have gained recognition thanks to performances for adults and who regard creating for children as a challenge and an adventure. The theatre also remains open to initiatives of the artistic ensemble. The repertoire is dominated by contemporary texts dealing with matters that are difficult but familiar to the main audience – young viewers.
We are open to experiments and exchange of experiences, we break down the walls separating puppet theatres from dramatic ones. We want WTL to be a place where already a few-year-olds can experience the richness of theatrical forms, both traditional and modern – from classic puppet techniques to multimedia projections, contemporary dance or post-dramatic texts. In addition to our own productions, we also present the best Polish and foreign performances as part of the Showcase of the New Theatre for Children (in 2013-2016 the showcase was annual, in 2017 changed the formula to the biennial).
We implement not only an artistic mission, but also a social and an educational one. We are constantly striving to expand the group of recipients, we strengthen activities outside the venue, we counteract exclusion from culture. In addition to our repertoire activities, we run an intensive inclusion programme. It consists of performances and introductory workshops (for infants and children up to three years old), as well as regular work with children and young people from care centers in the “Summer in the Theatre” programme, the “Make Yourself a Theatre” workshops and the “WE DO. The Youth Theatre Group”. In 2017, we also implemented the programme of the
“OPEN THEATRE! Workshop for Inclusive Activities”, consisting among others of workshops for children with sensory dysfunctions, conducted by experienced educators, sign interpreters and audio description specialists. Each season we strive to make two premieres available to children with sight and hearing impairments.
