Information

Somewhere Else is a touching story about the absurdity of war and its horrors. How do the atrocities of war look like through children’s eyes? It is only through this perspective that we can fully understand the absurdity of war. This topic is quite delicate and painful, therefore it often remains concealed. It is however quite necessary to discuss it, and especially in front of the youngest audience.
The performance Somewhere Else tells us about a little girl, who finds herself caught in the middle of the war. It is through her eyes that we observe her changing city, filled with horrors, violence and fear. But, hope too. Threatening planes are flying over the city, the streets are empty and there is no food left on the shelves in the store. The school is closed. And every now and then gunshots are heard nearby. Her environment gradually changes …And becomes intolerable. The little girl’s only wish is to go to another country, where it would be much nicer. She wants to go somewhere else, somewhere far away from the war atrocities.
The performance includes a variety of modern technological approaches to puppet theatre. The classical puppet animation is intertwined with live video projections and virtual drawings. The actress and animatoress draws on a rotating table the environment, strolling around which we see the main heroine – the little girl. She uses chalk to draw hilly landscapes, high skyscrapers and shuddering soldiers. It is a simple bar drawing, magically coming to life during the performance. This effect results from the fact that the chalk drawing is actually complemented by the hidden projected image, which is moving according to the stop-motion animation principle. The combination of moving and non-moving drawings creates an illusion of an animated chalk drawing. It is an entirely new technique in the puppet theatre, overstepping and softening the boundaries between the individual genres. This visually animated adventure is interesting for theatre artists, animators and filmmakers alike, especially because they allow strong intertwinement of variety of genres. The video projections absorb the audience into the very heart of an exciting story about the atrocities of war, which are “fortunately” happening “somewhere else”. Or maybe not?

A SHORT HISTORY OF THE THEATRE

The Ljubljana Puppet Theatre (LPT) is the main Slovenian puppet theatre staging puppet and drama performances for children, youngsters and adults. Its predominant target audiences are children and young people. The public institution was established in 1948 (as the City Puppet Theatre) and has been based in Mestni dom in Krekov Square since 1984. In its work, the LPT builds on the hundred-year tradition of Slovenian puppetry. With the establishment of the Museum of Puppetry at the Ljubljana Castle, the LPT officially became the caretaker of this precious, century-old heritage. The theatre manages five regular and several smaller, occasional venues. At these venues, which offer seating for approximately a thousand people, it produces fifteen premieres a year and is visited by around 110,000 spectators.
The LPT also pays special attention to cultural and artistic education in all its dimensions and at the national level cooperates in the endeavours to strengthen the standards and systemically place quality cultural content in the programmes of educational institutions. Every two years, it therefore joins forces with the Slovenian Theatre Institute and Cankarjev dom in organising the Golden Stick Festival, a national festival providing an overview of theatre performances for children and youth.
The second festival organised by the LPT, which takes place every even-numbered year, is the LUTKE International Puppet Festival. This festival brings to Slovenia the best foreign puppet productions and promotes all kinds of contemporary interdisciplinary and genre developments.
The LPT is a member of the International Puppetry Association UNIMA, ASSITEJ – International Association of Theatre for Children and Young People, the Slovenian Puppetry Artists Institution, Small Size, an international association focused on productions for early years (under six years of age), and one of the founding members of NEECPA, a network of puppet centres joining primarily the key players from Scandinavia, the Baltic region and Russia.
LPT is a public institution founded by the City of Ljubljana, whose work is predominantly financed by the Ministry of Culture and the City of Ljubljana.
